I just updated to WMP 11 and now whenever I try to listen to streaming audio
on the net and also when I watch certain .avi files the playback is extremely
slow.

For those of you who remember turntables, it sounds like you're trying to
play a 45rpm record on the 33rpm settting.

I've searched the knowldege base and looked around for settings I could
tweak, but no luck.

I'm an advanced user, so if the solution involves modifying the registry or
something I can handle it.

start/run, type:
cleanmgr

Your %TEMP% and other files may be the problem.

Nope. used the manager. Then went to IE settings and deleted all temp files,
cookies, history, form data. Still slow playback. If use other players, Like
BS player, they all work fine. Only in WMP.

WMP: You can reinstall it from "%systemdrive%\program files\windows media
player\installer\mpsetupxp.exe"

In WMP 11, go to the 'Enhancements' pane, rt. click and then 'Play Speed
Settings' and have at it.

That was the first thing I tried. Didn't work. I also tried re-installing it,
but still slow playback. Guess I'll try going back to WMP 10
