Hi,
Our server runs 2003 with XP client. Our XP clients takes about 5-10 seconds
to login and until you see the start menu.

Introduction:
We have had issues before were login took as long as a couple of minutes
which was a troublesome timesink for us. We fixed this issue however, by
setting the DNS manual to point to out server.

To make it simple I used the groupeditor and specified what DNS clients are
supposed to use. Simple and efficient, and the alternative to change dns on
clients are now grey:ed out - just like I want it.

Our problem:
Recently I setup a new client and I discovered that it was not affected by
the servers DNS policy and did not have the alternative for dns grey:ed out.
Other policies, like for example disabling security center abides the server
policy and is also disable on this client.

The problem is at login in, it takes ages... sometimes 5-10 minutes. Today
it has been sitting for 20 minutes and trying to login.

I have no idea what is wrong with this machine. Any clues? I would be very
grateful for some help on this. Thanks in advance.

The new client that I installed was previously used by another user, and the
computers "switched" users. I removed both computers from our domain.
Switched the computers machine names locally and then connected them to the
domain. At first the same computer with login issues had the same IP adress
as the other for some reason and I could still login to the domain but I
couldnt reach the network. After I reinstalled the network adapter it seemed
to be solved and didnt give it any more thought. I dont know if this might
have something to do with the above issue.

The machine names are associated with a unique SID and it sounds as though AD
is having a problem with that. You will solve it by taking them off them off
the domain giving them a unique name and joining them back to the domain.

Need more help? Just post back
