In case SP1 is not offered by Windows Update, find out what is causing it
first:

SP1 is not offered by Windows Update usually because you have one or more
conflicting drivers.
There would be no point in manually installing it if that is the case - you
would possibly get into conflicts.

It's a crap shoot. I did, wish I didn't. This is the first time I
installed any Windows Service Pack that afterwards Windows was less,
not more stable and now is more prone to crash. Go figure.

What do you think are the 5 main differences between Vista and Hardy Hereon?

"Cause 5

A hardware device driver or device software was problematic when you updated
to Windows Vista SP1.

The Windows Update service can detect the small set of device drivers and
software that falls into this category. The Windows Update service will not
offer Windows Vista SP1 until an update for the hardware device driver or
the device software has been installed."

"Problematic" means someone, somewhere had a problem during testing of SP1.
I have one or two programs that are "problematic" for years now but have
caused no problems for me personally. Are you feeling lucky?

Cheers,

Earle

Kind of like the Vista Upgrade Advisor saying hey dude you won't have
any problems upgrading your system from XP, go right ahead. Then once
you start the ACTUAL Vista installer it starts to whine and nag,
ironically about two Microsoft applications I had.

Classic Microsoft "customer support". Say everything is OK to induce
you to upgrade, then once you buy their crap, scream it may not work.

It's a crap shoot to do any Windows update.

Cheers,

Earle

Actually I have never had any problems with any Vista updates. I do,
however, look at each one and uncheck the ones that do not apply to my
system (like updates for Works or Outlook.)

I had the same situation. None of the reasons applied to me so I
downloaded the full SP1 made a full backup and ran the update without
a hitch. YMMV

If you don't have either of those installed, you shouldn't be getting
any updates for them.

Then by all means, give it a go. Most people do not experience any issues
with SP1. If you run into problems, just report back to the newsgroup.
