Shortordercook's Computer Knowledge

There is no need to feel embarrassed at the simplest question, shortordercook. We are here to help everyone and that means even the absolute beginner and upwards.
Just ask one question at a time and one of our Techies will give you a link if it has previously been discussed or give you step by step instructions "How To"
Start your own Topic and ask any question rather than post in someone else's thread.:)

Yes please never feel embarrassed cook, we were all there once and forums are about users helping users not gurus condescending to give
of their time if you get my drift. Your problems refresh us and keep us up to date with what is going on in today's computer world so believe it or not you actually help us by bringing up your issues. As Bob said and I always say "the only stupid question is the one you don't ask"! I was part of a radio help desk show many years ago and we used to say that once an hour.

@shortordercook I told you we were friendly here at Free PC Help Forum. Thanks for joining my friend. Invite more of our friends to join. We talk about every thing here including malware!!Cats-4 said he would join this week end. Have invited Fedora to join also.
When will your new PC be ready??

HaHaHa; Are you sure? But, actually, would be obliged! If there is a heading to the Topic, it may also help others who are trying to learn, and afraid to look stupid! LOL!! The fact is, before one can learn how to really protect their computer, one needs to know all about the insides, what makes these things tick, how to do the simple chores and maintenance, and shortcuts to speed up some of the processes! I have spent, and donetao can verify, probably 100 hrs. + on this thing, trying to learn what I should have learned when I began to use a computer the 1st time... 20 yrs ago..or 25 yrs. ago.:D That's OK, never had the desire, or time or whatever... you keep it running and I'll use it was my motto! Now, that is no longer enough, and the amount/ types/ and serious nature of assaults has made me realize that ultimately, I am responsible for the safe use of my computer! Wonder why that thought never crossed my mind before?

It's up an running. I will be idling in it for the next couple hours if anyone wants to check in to test it out.

Go to http://www.teamspeak.com/?page=downloads and download the client for your system.

Once you install it a wizard will start to set up your microphone. After that you'll get to the connection screen.

Once you have the client installed and configured simply right click and copy this link and paste it into your browser to connect to the server:

ts3server://ts.extremetechsupport.com?port=9987

To configure a manual connection do this:

On the connection screen uncheck the option to load a server list. Once the client is loaded select the connection tab at the top and add this in the server spot:

ts.extremetechsupport.com

Then in username use your forum username. No password required so ignore that field.

Click connect and it should connect you to the server and put you in the chatroom.

If I'm there talk away poke me and we can test it out.[/URL]
Ok, another thought to tell my friends ( brother-in-law- Richard and Computer Guru Bob), that I'll need voice options, too... Thanks.

Hi shortordercook. What have you learnt so far? Trying to find a starting point.:)

Hi shortordercook. What have you learnt so far? Trying to find a starting point.:)
Well, I have learned to download and install programs- but don't know how to configure or 'tweak' them- so they will run cleanly on MY machine, have learned how to get a screenshot, by shift-printscreen, have learned that not all programs are compatible, have learned that some programs can be on your computer, kinda on stand-by...(although I don't always know how to configure that), have learned to be excruciatingly careful on anything I click on, and in any emails, have learned where task bar is, and how to watch my computer run at 100% too much, have learned that CPU's have temperatures to run at, have learned there are a multitude of programs available to aid in keeping system clean(er) and safe...safer, gee whiz:

have learned that it is better to go directly to the site I want to download from, vs... "Bubba-Billy's Free Downloads" that come with a bunch of unwanted things or viruses also, have learned of a place called VirusTotal, all, all new to me, in addition to see how many millions of attacks are always coming down the pipes, with good guys trying to ..keep up/thwart/pass the word, protect, or even remove malware/viruses/ attacks and the devastation it causes..

Have learned that it is extremely likely that my computer was used, via that o_Othing down there...that black box..duh- :huh:Router- That's it!!! and that I need to password protect it, too...(which I haven't done yet)... I am sure it was used, because it was extremely busy for awhile, after which I read about attacks that shut down places like Gov't sites and others. I actually just turned this computer off, unplugged it, and mostly stayed off for a couple of days- after which I read that ( I forget who- a Bank or??? ) was overwhelmed on their website.. and have learned that need to learn more and that the sooner, the better!

Hope that wasn't too wordy!
have also learned that there is more than one site, one forum, that I might be more comfortable, possibly, here, or benefit in my learning endeavors from multiple searches. Have also learned that some sites aren't for me, if for no other reason than I am friendly and care about others.

I am exhausted just reading it.(Joking)
These are my thoughts.
You should wait till you get your new computer and set that one up correctly.
Otherwise we are double dipping and have to do a lot of things twice. The way you tell us your computer is running now you will have grief trying to carry out any instructions. You have put up with this computer to date so 3-4 weeks won't make much difference.:)

I agree! Not much to do now but try to remain safe, ride it through, and wait for the new one!! I should learn how to do and DO a backup, though in the meantime, just in case, and for the experience. Any cleaning tips will always help too!! Thanks!
IMHO You should learn how do do back up images right here from members on this forum. Your presence has brought a lot of life to Free PC Help Forum. I'm glad you joined us. Free PC Help Forum is different than MT and a lot more friendly.
There are several members here that will help you including myself. We don't have a lot of tutorials yet on Free PC Help Forum so I use ones I find on the web.
Here's a good one to start with. As far as maintaining your new PC, members here will help you do that also. Don't get involved with snake oil programs. Windows has all the tools you need to maintain and keep it running like a Singer sewing machine.:D

Hi @shortordercook here's a good link to start with!!;);) This is especially for you!! This is for W7 but a lot of this works for other OS's
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/...optimize-windows-better-performance=windows-7

No matter how fast or shiny computers might be when they're new, they all seem to get slower over time. That state-of-the-art PC you bought last year might not feel like such a screamer after you install a dozen programs, load it with antispyware and antivirus tools, and download untold amounts of junk from the Internet. The slowdown might happen so gradually that you hardly notice it, until one day you're trying to open a program or file and wonder, "What happened to my poor PC?"

Whatever the cause, there are lots of ways to help speed up Windows and make your PC work better—even without upgrading your hardware.
