XP Pro SP2 1.6 GHZ 1GB memory.
I could only get into Safe Mode. No reason, it just hung by itself.
It had been ok shortly before. I made no changes.
I ran an AV Scan.
Device manager OK.
Chkdsk OK.
Memory check OK.
2 recent restore points worked but no help. Tried to go back several
more days with bold restores and the message said it couldn't
restore. ?
I tried to run SFC but it would not even start. (Safe Mode). I used
Start > Run and entered cmd. Then from the command prompt I entered:
sfc /scannow. That didn't work.

I resolved it finally after several days of trying by restoring an
older full backup OVER the system to hopefully replace any corrupted
or missing files only. The backup restore stopped after about 1/3 of
the way. That's happened to me before even on a formatted disk with
XP. Don't know why. Anyway I then booted and it went right into
Normal mode. Apparently it replaced a bad system file(s). System is
fine now.

If I had been able to run SFC from Safe Mode it would have saved me
a lot of grief. Is there some trick to running it? It works ok in
Normal mode but Safe Mode is where you need it.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Bill Watt
