setup.exe not working

We're running XP sp2 with Windows Live One Care.
We've lost the ability to install programs. When we run the setup.exe, we
get an hour glass for ten seconds but then nothing else happens. However,
when we log off, we get a message that the program called 'sample' is not
responding. As soon as we click on End Task to the program called 'sample',
the program starts to install (but of course the laptop is logging off, so
that's no good). This happens in all accounts on the computer and all
accounts are in the administrator group. I can't find anything in the task
manager about 'sample'. Is the best thing to do to search the hard drive
for sample.exe?
Thanks, Jeremy

I would certainly try to find such a program. In addition, the name
"setup.exe" is generic. This
particular version of setup.exe is evidently intended to install a program
called "sample". Other
versions of "setup.exe" might install Photoshop, for example.

The Intel ProSet turned out to be the offending application. I found a
posting on the net about it. Once I unistalled it, all was good again.
Thanks for everyone's suggestions.
