Setting folder permissions Taking Forever After Sharing

A computer with XP Home died, so I moved the drive to another XP Home
computer. The contents of the drive showed-up and I went to the new
drive and shared it at the root. Now the "Setting folder
permissions..." dialog is up and has been for 10 minutes. What the
heck is it doing? I didn't want ever to write to this drive, I just
wanted to pull some stuff off of it. I had hopes of booting this
drive again, once the hardware in the original system is repaired. Is
this folder permissions activity going to blow the bootability of the
drive?

Here's an update. The XP Home machine that was having this issue was
a Dell with their screwball Google Toolbar install (http://
people.bu.edu/allanonl/gtb/). The "Setting folder permissions..."
dialog was still showing, and the hard drive was still being read. I
went to the task list, saw GTB2.exe in the task list, and killed it.
It said it could not kill the process. I then saw GTB.exe in the task
list, and I killed that. Immediately after killing these, the
"Setting folder permissions..." dialog was gone. Coincidence or
causality?
