Sesktop composition is missing in vista

I have recently purchased a Compaq F500 Presario Laptop and I have notived
that the desktop Composition enable option is missing. I have another of the
same and a NEC desktop that have this option.

1. What does it do
2. how do i get this option back without to much fuss.

I have done a fresh install of vista and the same result was found.

Formating partition as to remove any trace of the Previous version of
Windows Seems to have worked, however I would still like to know what
desktop Composition is.
