hello everyone!!!!!!!!

I have DELL poweredge 1650 server installed with windows 2000 server. It was
working just fine.

Recently we upgraded memory for this server also upgraded all three
harddrive(each of 72GB) and created new raid-5 configuration and installed
windows 2000 server. It is fully updated with service pack 4 and all patches
are downloaded.

I have also configured IIS 5.0 and Merak mail server on this. Also DNS,WINS
service is configured on this.

(1)I am seeing that sometimes server stops responding while i m working on
the server. It stops responding means it looks like it is hanged there.and
after some time elasped it starts working normally.

(2) I alslo observed one problem when i was remotely loged in to server and
working but suddenly it stopped working and my remote session was ended
saying there is no network connections.(Observed this problem two time)

(3) Also i am seeing that it is taking too much time in accesing workgroup
computers.
(4) Hard drive is making drum noise.

other than every thing is working just fine.

I have called dell tech support checked the dignostic test and every thing
it is showing is perfect.tHere is no issue with any hardware. They told me
that there might be a software issue like ms-os problem.

I am not sure how to debug for os problem.how to start to check if MS OS is
problematic and how can i resolve this problem without disturbing server.

all your help is highly apprecitaed.

Waiting to hear from all of this board users.

Thanks,
Bharat

I would use the Performance Monitor to log a number of
key parameters, then try to correlate them to the date/time
when the server appeared to hang.

Thanks for your quick response.
Can you be more specific what kind of counter should i use and what should i
know suppose if i set counters to collect data for one week and how to
diagnose them.
I would be more glad if you can take some more time to explain me.

anyway thanks for your valuable suggestion and quicker response.

Thanks,
Bharat

I would monitor CPU loading, hard disk response and
some network adapter response if available. I would then
make a note of the time when the server hangs, then check
for unusual spikes in the performance logs at that same time.

Hi Pegasus,

Thanks for your comments .
I have collected datas for counters like %processer time, % disk usage, Avg
disk que length, current disk queue length and total byte/sec.

I have checked the data in performance log and alert and foune at two
placess peak for disk time and the high for peak was 69.6 value.

I have attached the file data collected from yesterday to till
now...........it's a binaty file. how do i attach it?
..................................
can you please check and let me know what one can understand from this data.

how to analyse it.

I must thankful to you once again for your views on providing me such
valuable tips.

Thanks,
Bharat

Hi Pegasus,

I have copied collected data and here is the link to download that file.

ftp://cash1.com/data.blg

If it asks for username and password.....

User: administrator
Pass: 80186

---------------
In this file i have collected data for the following counters....
(1)Bytes total/Sec
(2)% Disk Time
(3) Avg Disk queue length
(4) Current Disk Queue length
(5)%Processor time.....

----------------------------------------
Can you please take a look and help me to identify whats wrong with the
server and how can i resolve this problem.

Once again i am very much thankful to you for your time and help.

Thanks,
Bharat
