the baker

my computer keeps telling me I have no anti virus software installed but I
have McAfee security centre I am running Vista home premium edition can any
one help
 
software is updated

Sounds like a compatibility issue between Windows Vista's Security Center
and McAfee. Give this a try, click Start > type Windows Security Center >
click it to open, then expand 'Malware Protection > under 'Virus Protection'
click the 'Show me the antivirus programs on this computer' link' from the
list of installed virus protection programs, select McAfee if its listed
there and click 'Turn On'.

I only have two options monitor the software myself or buy software

"Buy software"? Give the exact text of the message you get, including
the name of the program prompting you to purchase the software.

Uninstall the McAfee and if you insist on using it (not recommended
since it is pretty dreadful), reinstall it. If you need help with that,
contact McAfee tech support. Otherwise replace the McAfee software with
a better antivirus such as NOD32, Kaspersky, or Avast (free). The
Windows Firewall is adequate for most people.
