I do not use the MS .NET framework which is why I assume that this most
recent update repeatedly refuses to install.Unfortunately I cannot get rid
of the Automatic Update icon from the taskbar with its accompanying ballon
telling me that 'updates are ready for download'.Any ideas how I can get rid
of it?

You're welcome. I try to do what I can.

My point is, how do you *know* you're not using the .NET framework?

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:

Tip: Temporarily disable real-time protection by your anti-virus and/or
anti-spyware applications (e.g., CounterSpy, Spysweeper, Spybot, AVG
Anti-Spyware) and/or any third-party firewall (e.g., ZA).
