Security settings in safe mode and USB mouse

Regarding the strange USB mouse install problem that I asked about earlier
this morning, (Subject: "USB Mouse is immediately blocked and uninstalled"),

I am thinking I might have messed up some default security settings one day
when I was looking around in safe mode and was trying to change some
priviledges for access to the hidden install partition. I probably messed
something up then (or maybe not).

How can I set the security back to default, i.e., the normal default
settings for the Administrator User (me)? Or check to see if something is
set to prevent the installation or use of a USB mouse.

Unless you changed Ownership or replaced a sub-container tree it's
doubtful your issue is ACL related. On the mouse issue, you should
create ( or login ) to an alternate account and test the mouse. It's also
possible that your USB device loading is such that the mouse being
added overloads the Controller bandwidth or Hub power limit. Most
USB mice consume only ~50mA. If the mouse came with a USB to
PS/2 converter plug, I'd try connecting the mouse with that interface.

How can I reinstall and or repair the Windows XP generic USB mouse driver?


The problem on this machine is not a power load problem on the USB port/s.
After a failed attempt at trying to install and use a USB mouse, I can still
use the USB on the machine to drive an external 2.5" non-powered hard drive.
And I can use the Microsoft USB mouse described in the next paragraph.

After installing from the CD, the Microsoft mouse software, I have been able
to use the Miscosoft IntelliMouse Optical just fine. However, if I try to
use any other verified working USB mouse, one will not install and work.

It looks like that the basic USB mouse installer/setup/driver is the
problem. There must be a way to reset this.

BTW: I tried to delete in the registry the entries that showed the name of
the Logitech Wheel Mouse that would not load, and the registy gives me an
error and will not allow the deletion of such entries. I also tried to
delete the Generic USB mouse entries, and the registry would not allow it.
Any thoughts here?
