security patches, hot fixes & updates

I open my add & remove menu and notice I have excessive amounts of security
patches, hot fixes and updates dating as far back to 2004. Can I delete these
older version without deteriorating my computer performance. Please respond

If you uninstall via Add/Remove then the patches / updates will be
uninstalled and likely winupdate will then reinstall them at a later date.
Allthough if you are refering to win updates then 2004 seems a little far
back.
You can allways hide win updates by unticking in the Add/Remove dialogue

If your computer is working stable and has all of the latest patches,
then you can. Best thing to do is blow away the backup folders in the
C:\Windows folder. They may be hidden in which case you can reveal
them by going to Control Panel > Folder Options > View > Show Hidden
Files and Folders. I think the backups are prefixed by a $. This will
likely save you a few hundred megabytes in disk space.

One deleted, you can click the hotfix in Add/Remove Programs and
remove it. Windows will say the hotfix no longer exists and will give
you the option to remove the entry which will tidy things up really
nice. Just be sure not to go to fast or you might uninstall something
necessary.
