Dell L600r,512ram,winXPpro,
I have a seagate ex HD 320g connected via 1.1usb,after transfering numerous
pictures to this drive i wanted to defrag it....I use Diskeeper lite which
works great on my internal drive.
the defragmentation is real slow on the ex drive and when i try to stop the
defrag it locks the computer up bigtime(this is the only time i have ever
seen a glitch with XP)
I have to power cycle the computer to reboot....I took the drive and hooked
it up to my son's Acer laptop which is about a year old and it defraged real
quick with no issues but he is running usb2.0
could the issue be with my older Dell 1.1 usb speed and or processor speed,
I have tried contacting Diskeeper but have had no responce.....probably wont
get one since im using their free version, any help would be much
appreciated....thx in advance...
note:I do have a pci 2.0usb adapter coming to speed things up

Doubt any hds would run on 1.1usb,2.0 has been geared toward hardware
for 4 or more years now....

Actually this computer is either a 99 or 2000 model it was originally loaded
with 98se....but surprisingly it transfers data pretty quick to the seagate
exdrive....like i said the only issue with it so far is the Diskeeper locking
it up,I'll find out soon enough if the 2.0 usb solves the issue

USB 1 IS the reason its slow! A defrag is an intensive I/O operation and
using USB1 will take ages - specially on an ancient computer.

Your new USB2 connection will speed it up, but the slow processor will
still hold it back - if its year 2000 then its a Pentium 2 or 3 probably.
