Scheduled Tasks keep losing passwords

I can not figure out when this started but my system no longer
remembers the passwords for the scheduled tasks.

I have two tasks scheduled to run nightly or weekly. One is a backup
and the other is a virus scan. If I edit the properties and put the
passwords in, the tasks run fine when manually running (rt-click,
run).

At some point (maybe after a reboot) the system starts giving error
codes instead of running..

The error log entries all look like the following:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Incremental.job" (sbestart.exe) 7/4/2007 12:45:00 AM ** ERROR **
The attempt to retrieve account information for the specified
task failed; therefore, the task did not run. Either an error
occurred, or no account information existed for the task.
The specific error is:
0x8004130f: No account information could be found in the Task
Scheduler security database for the task indicated.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Bruce

You seem to be one of the many people posting here lately who have "Access
Control List" (ACL) entries that have lost their info. If you are interested
in experimenting with what is obviously your 'production machine', you might
look over this recent article. (Personally, I suspect some recent 'windows
security update', but what do I know? :)

Hi Bruce,

Do you have Service Pack 2 installed? There is a hotfix for this
problem if you do not have Service Pack 2 installed.

Task Scheduler jobs stop running in Windows XP

I did see that hotfix when I was trying to solve the problem.
Unfortunately, I have MCE Service Pack 2. So I assumed I should not
run it.

The problem seems to have started in Early June based upon my backup
logs.

Mark,

Thanks for the links. Do I have anything to lose by resetting these
permissions?

I also seem to think some form of update caused the problem. Based
upon my backup logs, the problems started somewhere near the beginning
of June.

Hi Bruce,

I have seem some fixes where you would delete all schedule tasks and
reboot. Then recreate your scheduled tasks to fix the task scheduler
database corruption.

Here is one exmaple:

We are, unfortunately, in uncharted territory here. What goes on with those
security updates is anyone's guess. I am expecting farther explorations by
MS. The troubles have been with USB (uPNP?), printers, and winlogon, (e.g.
your scheduled tasks.)

I quit thinking MS was listening a long time ago :/ The rumblings on the
newsgroups always precede a wakeup. (The clearest example, the Blaster Worm)

But, back to your problem. Another approach might be to change passwords for
those accounts. (not going to be a popular suggestion with them, no doubt
: ) ) I am thinking that it might toggle something in winlogon.

I have this problem on Windows 2003 but the hotfix is for windows xp. I
installed 2003 SP2 and it did not help. I also followed instructions I found
else where that if you delete all tasks, stop and restart after 15 min the
problem would be fixed. It worked for about a week and now I have the same
problem again. Seems we need a hot fix for windows 2003 as well.
