Scanning attached photos in email

I have a gmail account and every time I try to open an attached photo that someone sends to me, I get the message "virus scan failed." I even tried sending a photo to myself and it did the same thing. I know the photo I sent to myself doesn't have a virus attached, because it's on my desktop and has passed daily virus scans for weeks. I tried all the suggestions given by Google on this, but nothing has worked. Any suggestions?
