sata hard drive 3Gbit/s or 1.5

Hello. I've got a serial ATA hard drive with a jumper to lower the data
transfer rate from 3.0Gbit/s to 1.5. I don't know what speed the motherboard
is on the computer. If I leave it set to the higher speed and the board can
only cope with 1.5Gbit/s will it still work only at the lower speed or could
it cause any damage/instability?

What is the make of the PC/motherboard check the manufactures website.

The two end nodes on the SATA cable, the PC and the HD, should negotiate
down from their individual best (3 Gb/s for some) to the best that both
support. There have been reports that some MBs (and some HDs?) do not
correctly negotiate, which is the reason for the jumper. So try 3Gb/s,
and see what happens with your gear.

I ran in to that very problem with a customers machine, finally tracked to
that, moved the jumper to 1.5, problems solved.
