Windows 95/98/ME safe mode

Hello,
I have an Ethernet connection to xdsl High Speed Internet. The Primary
Network Logon is set at Windows Logon, such that when users logon on to
windows they are logging on to network at the same time. Since there is no
Network Logon with this configuration and many online AS and AV and FW that
make system calls to the disk, I am having problems running the maintenance
programs like Scandisk and Defragmentation. If I drop the FW while online
the system will get hammered. If I go into Safe Mode, does this disconnect
the machine from the internet so I can run these programs?

You will not have web access while in Safe Mode and it's better to run
Scandisk/Defrag in Safe Mode anyway since only the minimal drivers and software
needed to run are loaded, therefore reducing any interference.

FYI ..... If you want a way to easily connect and reconnect to the
internet, create a shortcut to C:\windows\winipcfg.exe. Then simply
select "release" or "renew".

I have this shortcut on the desktop. I have used that to put the machine
into standby mode when on public ip pass thru, however with ICS on the
device driver will not allow the standby mode. The ip address would be
0.0.0.0 for ipv4. Although this is not an assigned or meaningful ip address,
it does not mean that it is [protected]. I really am not certain about
0.0.0.0. or 1.1.1.1. The link local is 169.254.x.x is another ip assigned
address that does not allow for access to the internet...but does not
specify whether or not it is a [protected mode] ip. The ICS is 192.x.x.x
with subnet 255.x.x.x depending on the size of the subnets. It has basic NAT
for the subnets, but here to not necessarily [protected mode] of operation,
and not for the gateway. A good point worth investigating though.

Brian, you say no web access from this side but what about from the outside
internet? Is safe mode [safe] from the continuous port scanning and
connection attempts etc. of the internet?

Maybe the online help for win.com can put your mind at rest. AISI, you
can have Safe Mode with (F6) or without (F5) networking.
