System Restore fails to create an automatic restore point:

Is the file sr.inf really missing? With file name extensions hidden in Explorer, it may simply show up as "SR".

Click Start, Run and type:

%windir%\inf\sr.inf

Press {ENTER}

Is the file contents shown?

I have xp sp2 and have a missing sr.inf file.

1. How can I get this back?

2. Will this cause any problems with system restore?

3. What could have deleted this file?

Hi,

In addition, the sr.inf file is used to reinstall System Restore. This file
is not needed for System Restore to function.

When you turn off System Restore, reboot, and turn it back on isn't that the
same as reinstalling System Restore?

No. Disabling System Restore by stopping monitoring of all drives simply
stops the System Restore Service from running. Enabling monitoring of a
drive(s) starts the service back up.

Using the sr.inf file reinstalls all the files needed to run System Restore.

How to reinstall System Restore in Windows XP:
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/reinstall.html

In either case all restore points will be lost.
