I have backed up my WinXP Pro and system state, in the event of a disaster
how would I rebuild my PC using this backup file if I had to do a clean
install?

I assume I would have to install a basic version of XP first?

The answer really depends on what is in the backup. What was used to
make the backup? For example, if the backup was made using Acronis
TrueImage and consists of a disc image of the entire system partition,
then Windows would have been re-installed from this image file. At the
other extreme, if only data and information files were backed up, then
Windows and all of the applications would have to be re-installed first.
Want to be a little bit more detailed?

Apologies, just the windows backup util.

Use the XP Cd to restore a full backup that you made with ntbackup

You boot from this CD and at the proper time you press one of the function
keys to get to the restore process. It isn't especially a clean way to
restore.

You will need a working floppy in addition to the drive on which you saved
the backup file.

Hi Gonzo,

I would not depend on Windows Backup for this. A much better method is to
use imaging software such as Acronis True Image.
http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage

or

Drive Image Backup Software for Windows
