restart & log back on

XP Home Restart & log & sleep issues

My computer with not restart, like for downloads etc. When I log off or put
it to sleep it wont log back on or wake up. They want me to do a whole
recovery with the disk, back to original, three years ago. Please help

Operating system (exactly...)?
Service pack level?
What *does* happen when you log off or put the machine to sleep? (describe
in detail)
Who is this "they" you speak of?

What is the brand of computer?
(I don't believe Circuit City "rolls their own", but I could be mistaken.)
