I am trying to follow kb 307545 but I alwyas get the message that "the system
cannot find the file specified' while trying to fix my Acer pc, xp home. It
does not come with the xp cd but I am using my DIY xp home sp2 cd to boot to
Recovery Console.

I am also using the external usb cd rom to boot to Recovery console as the
internal which is still connected/detected to the pc (but not working)

At the Recovery console, 1: c:\windows
and I hit 1 and it gives me c:\windows>
the I type 'md tmp' (without quotes)

then at c:\windows> I type in "copy c:\windows\system32\config\system
c:\windows\tmp\system.bak" and hit enter,
message is "the system cannot find the file specified"

Must I change the drive alphabet here? What are the changes that I must make
to kb 307545 Please help.......... thanks.

Perhaps the file you're trying to copy does not exist? Type
this command to see for yourself:

dir c:\windows\system32\config {Enter}

What file(s) do you see?

It says, quote

The volume in drive C is Acer
The volume serial no is 320d-190e
Directory of c:\windows\system32\config
An error occurred duirng the directory enumeration... unquote

This is bad news. It can mean one of two things:
a) The file system is corrupt, or
b) You have some bad clusters on the hard disk.

At this stage you need to decide on your first priority:
- If you have neglected to back up your important files
to an independent storage medium then you must do
so immediately, before attempting to repair Windows.
- If the loss of all data on your hard disk is no issue then
can run the chkdsk command in order to repair the
damage, followed by the remainder of the KB article
you quote. You may have to recreate the "system32\config"
folder manually after running chkdsk.

If you need to back up your important files now then you
must temporarily install your hard disk as a slave disk in
some other WinXP PC in order to access your files.

Thanks and will try to save the data first.

Remember to save your EMail files too, then start thinking
about your backup philosophy. A 2.5" disk in an external
USB case costs very little but makes a very effective backup
medium.
