My DVD burner is drive K:. For some reason I all of a suddent also have a
drive R: which says it's a cdrom but does not access my burner. I have only
one optical drive listed in Device Manager so I don't know how to remove this
drive R: from "My Computer" and I can't figure out why it appeared.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Boot into Safe Mode, open Device Manager, delete/remove ALL CD/DVD ROM
drives, reboot, Windows will re-detect hardware.
