I am trying to install mcafee security but was instructed to uninstall
incompatible programs during the download. two programs were listed. norton
and ca etrust.
norton uninstalled as it redirected me to a removal tool. ca etrust seemed
to uninstall using add/remove program but when i went to download mcafee
again the message about incompatible program came up again with just ca
etrust listed.
went to add/remove to try again and its not there. i will be left without
protection if i cannot resolve this soon, any suggestions

thanks in advance

Even after uninstall, eTrust will sometimes orphan the licensing service.
This is left to start by a Registry call. I don't remember the exact file
location but if you check your Services map you likely find a License
service that belongs to CA ( Computer Associates ) or eTrust. Also
many programs even after uninstall leave components installed in the
\Program Files\Common Files path that must be manually removed.

Did you reboot your PC after uninstalling the software, especially Norton?
If not, do so and then try installing McAfee.

There must be some remnants of one or both programs you uninstalled on your
PC.
The usually suspects are folders on the hard drive and entries not deleted
from the registry.

Search your drive, especially C:\Program Files for any subfolders that are
named after the products:
(Example: C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus). Delete these remnants.

Create a System Restore point and then:
Use regedit's search function to search for registry keys that have the
product names that were uninstalled.

The Norton uninstall program does not uninstall everything. Run this:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

BTW, I think McAfee is just as bad as Norton.
