I was trying to set up a computer with remote desktop, and I realized
I could not do this because it was running XP home edition. Is there
a way to install the remote desktop application onto a computer
running home?

Nope. But you could use tightVNC instead:

Remember to thank Micro$oft.

Thanks you, Microsoft, for producing a Home version of XP that lacks things
that most home users don't need, in exchange for a reduced price.
