Red Shaded Items in Start Menu

What does it mean when some of the entries in the Start Menu are
shaded red?

Anyone? Sorry if I've missed something blindingly obvious but I've
googled and looked at Windows help to no avail.

If you mean the background of certain items are shaded, that's just the
start menu telling you that new programs have been installed, and the
highlighted items are the shortcuts to those programs.

If you mean the text itself is red, then I'm not altogether sure. In
more than a year of using Vista, I've never seen this happen, and you're
the first report of this occurance that I know of...

Probably the same way I did. It reminded me of XP's way of doing
that.

If you don't like it, remove it by:

Right-click the Start orb

Choose Properties

Choose to Customize the Start Menu

Scroll down to "Highlight..." and untick that option.
