recognizing my usb disk drive

my old computer xp reconizes my external disk drive when I play dvd/cds but when I use a labeler to light scribe a disk, it only shows the drive that came with the computer, and does not recognize the usb drive. what do I do to get the computer to recognize it to burn a l/s label
