Seems to me that their time would be better spent locking up the warlords,
fighting disease and feeding the starving population.

Somehow a bloated belly pygmy and Linux seem like a good match.
So maybe this will work after all?

Maybe you can airlift 10,000 crank em' up Linux OLPC's there?

Even if the natives can't use them, they could always crank them up and
sell them on ebay so they can buy food?

Not if they are dead from AIDS or starvation, which is my point.

The give a man a fish vs teach a man to fish is noble but in this extreme
case there are far more important priorities than a Linux system.

Surviving is one.

I will not argue that starvation is going to be a huge issue, in fact given
the population growth in some countries it is inevitable. They are poorly
educated and multiply out of control and the UN is useless in stopping it.
In most educated and developed countries population growth has ceased and
levelled off. Namely North American and most of Europe. Even China has
policies.

The world now is past 6.6 billion and there are two choices, war or
education. OLPC is education. But most who have studied the issues of
human population agree, we are likely too many for a sustainable future.
Our future is going to be one of food and energy shortages. These people
need to be educated to help produce the food.

The fact is Vista is fat, slow, complex and expensive. Linux is lean, fast,
consistent and inexpensive. Most people in this world and in emerging
markets are not going to pay the Vista price in hardware or software. And
there is nothing Vista can do that Linux cannot. Often Linux even does it
better.

Vista will never see the market share XP did. I for one think the full
version price of Ultimate is stupid, and only would appeal to those snobbish
enough to part with the cash.
