Actually, it's best to teach them to believe what is correct rather than
always think for themselves lest their brains fall out of their noses, like
it has done for the LinTards.

Actually.... Thinking for yoursel makes it more likely that you will fall
in. You don't usually find
a group of people congregating at the bottom of cracks in the ice.

There is nothing like thinking for yourself that makes repeating all of
the old mistakes from hisory the farce that it always is..

"Free thinkers" are almost invariably Losrs.

That's not being a free thinker. That's just being observant.

Being a free thinker is being off on a glacier on your own, following your
own path being a real man,
and falling into all of the holes that the group of collective thinkers
avoided.

Taking pride in being a "free thinker" is like taking pride in the fact
that you drive through open fields, and forests to get to the grocery store
rather than taking a paved road that goes right too the place.

Reasonable people stick to the known pathways but keep an eye on the
sides of the pathway for a potentially
more efficient route.

Yup. And this brings us back to Linux where all of the 50 year old
mistakes of Unix have been re-created in their full glory.

LinTards are followers, basking in the glory of 50 years of perpetual Unix
failure.

Wait until junior brings home SAT prep software from school.
LSAT prep software from College.
Mcat software.
Applications from colleges that require *doc format. Are you REALLY
going to trust Openoffice translating things correctly?
I wouldn't.
Not a chance, it's just too important to trust a free wannabe program
like OpenOffice to translate properly to MSoffice which 99 out of 100
is what the admissions dept is running.

Sorry, Linux is a lost cause.

Teach your children something they can actually use to interface with
the rest of the population instead of forcing them to use a system
that is incompatible with 99 percent of the rest of the earth.

You forgot EDUCATION IS FREE.

So what you are really saying is that schools should ban all
proprietory software because like education being free
it is the governments job that all software should be mandated
to be free. Parenting is all about sharing software and code.
Proprietory stuff in schools creates divides whereas GPL'd
code makes sharing easy.

Look here for hundreds of free LiveCDs that are free
with source code.

That would be free source code and free operating system
like Linux and the 20,000+ educational, scientific and other
types of seriously useful commercially supported software.

Without free source code and free software mandated in schools
children would be forced down the pirating route early in
their life with proprietory software.

yeah, teach your children to be stupid domesticated animals, like 99% of
earth's population.

Pretty much the only _application_ that requires .doc format is Word. And
even then Word will open other format files as well, so Word doesn't even
_require_ .doc files.

That's what virtual machines are for.

And actually, they should not be sending out MS Office documents to their
students. Just because the school has MS Office, does not mean the
students do. MS Office doesn't cost 49.95 after all, and just because
someone runs windows does not mean they also own MS Office.

PDF Files exist for a reason and are much better suited and can be opened
by everyone, in any OS without the need for proprietary software which is
beyond the budget of the average student to actually legally afford.

You people are replying to Gary Stewart. It's a troll that changes his name all
the time (suzie.linux@gmail.com this time).

Filter that out, but it will keep coming back with new fake names and posting
from a proxy.

Possibly, but not a single person has been able to offer a rebuttal to
what he is saying.
Sounds like you whining Linux screws need some grease.

People want applications, they don't care about an operating system.
In fact most don't even know what an operating system is.
Windows has the applications people use and need.
Linux does not.
It's that simple.

Its actually better to teach them to think for
themselves then to blindly follow the pack.

So let them "think for themselves" - but how is that related to using
linux? The two are completely orthogonal to each other. Professor Steven
Hawkings uses Windows. Does this mean that he is incapable of independent
thought?

Yes, it's simple.....just simply wrong.

More titles are (becoming) available for Linux....

Maple 11

ProE
http://www.ptc.com

Vuescan Pro
http://hamrick.com/vsm.html

Maya 2008

Here, NexTag has a big list of Linux s/w.
http://www.nextag.com/Software--a-Software+Platform-_-Linux--
zz300170zB4z5---html

Admittedly, not a huge, all-enconpassing list, but applications people
use & need none the less.

Setting aside business users, for which the big claim is Office doesn't
work on Linux and OpenOffice isn't good enough. Then again, how many
Office users/companies use MS Office in anymore than basic ways ?

We'll look at home users then.

What percentage of users do nothing but internet surfing and e-mail ? Or,
how many people have more than one computer, with at least one only used
for internet.

There is absolutely no argument that Linux lacks any Internet
applications...browsers, e-mail, ftp, news clients, chat, P2P, it's all
there.

As a matter of fact, of my 4 home PC's here, mine is the only one that is
ever used for anything other than internet, and one is just a file
server. My inlaws are the same way, two computers, and only used for
internet stuff.

Most stuff like that is web based these days. They don't have to worry

Hawking learned how to think for himself before windows ever existed.
And his platform might use windows as a base but it's unlike anything YOU'LL
ever use.

I never said that. But not everything is wrong
with Macs or Linux either. But these ones that try
to say that MS is the only way do not think for
themselves. A monoculture is never good for anybody.
