actually, any 64-bit Microsoft OS does not include command.com anymore.
only the 32-bit. and even then I really wonder if Vista 32-bit does...
I heard Microsoft took it away in Vista...

Windows Vista (Both 32 and 64 Bit versions) will not run any kind of
16-bit application, whether its a MSDOS or Windows based exe image. They
only way to get toi run 16 bit apps is to install Microsoft Virtual PC
2007 (or some other Virtual PC application), and install a supporting
OS, such as DOS 6.22 or Windows 3.11 into that.

This has been true since even the BETA editions of Vista.

Not quite. The 32-bit version of Vista does include NTVDM to run 16 bit
applications. However, this is limited to those that can be virtualized. If
the application tries to use direct hardware access, then like XP it will
not run in Vista as that function is not allowed.

The only real issue I have noticed is that some older 32-bit programs
have 16-bit installers.

I recently purchased a new machine that has x64 Windows. When I
installed some older favorite 32-bit applications, I could not apply the
patches because of their 16-bit installers. This was kind of dumb, since
the initial install of the package used a 32-bit installer.

Now, my kid's machine has 32-bit Vista. So, I installed the application
there. I also installed the patches there. Then I copied all the files
to my x64 machine, and what do you know, I now have a patched
application running in 32-bit mode.

It would have been easier to have an emulator to run the patch, but
hey, I got it to work.
