Well I can't see it being the video card, be interested how they came
to that conclusion, but you never know.

The most likely cause is the laser or optical bloack as they are
usually called, there are optic's inside the block as well to seperate
the forward beam and the returned beam that has been modulated by the
disc, also in the block is the focusing mechanism that moves the lens up
and down and sideway's.... plenty to go wrong in them.

At all cost avoid those cleaning disc with a brush fixed in the disc...
the disc is spinning round like the clappers and when the poor ol'
focusing mechanism with the lens hits the brush it knocks it for a home
run, certainly do more harm than good.

It's alway's a good idea to keep a copy 'any' important disc - just in
case, as you discovered lopping it in another drive... say a DVD could
also help.

Your best approach would have been to try another drive in your
computer first of all, at least this will confirm if it's to blame or
not.

The million dollar question is why do you want to install Xp because
there may be some clues or underlying cause that is the root of your
problems?

Well I have done all the T/S I could do along with calling MSI and
having another person stop by and having him go at it.
It boils down to the North Bridge. I informed the customer and he
would like to get the same motherboard put back into the computer. Does
anyone have a spare MSI 648 Max (that works) they would like to part
with???? LoL
