Windows 95/98/ME Re-Install Win98SE ?

I was given a Yr 2000 HP desktop PIII 866 w/ 384 Mb ram, running Win98SE.
It has more capability than my older 1998 HP.

I'm having two problems which I can't resolve. I'm connected to the
Internet via ethernet cable> DLink SuperG router>cable modem.

The older machine (Celeron500 256Mb) was connected to the net via a USB
connection as the installer couldnt get (he tried) a 10/100 hard card to
function (Port conflicts he said). Given that, the connection was
reasonably fast but the machine did have 'falling offline" problems,
especially if left alone/inactive for a while. During D/L though (say 25
parts x 309 Mb .WMV files) it was fast and smooth..1 0f 25, 2 of 25, 3 of 25
etc right up to 25,

On the PIII, I installed a new (er) PCI 10/100 card [pitched the original
ISA one]and got it running pretty well but it does "hang" from time to time
during downloads. Where this is most evident is trying to Update my
NEWSGROUP list of some 60,000 groups..it will usually hang at 140 groups..if
I keep hitting reset, on occasion it will grab up to 6500 groups but then
hangs again.

Trying to D/L the same 25 part (309Mb X 25 .WMV files) may get one or two
parts then it just hangs..I have to hit STOP and start again. It is nearly
impossible to D/L even one part intact w/o it hanging.

It also shows up when my AVG is updating..it hangs for probably 25 seconds
or more during the D/L, then finishes uinlike my other P4Laptop

D/L of larger files such as JPGs stalls & stutters as well...about 1/10th
the D/L spd of my P4 laptop on the same network

So, what I'm wondering is, can I reinstall Win98SE off the disk I have
without LOSING the drivers etc for other hardware (such as the PCI
10/100card- I left the disks for that in Az and I'm 1600 miles away now) and
other software/drivers 'onboard' which I can't replace ? Are there
"sections" of the Win98 I should leave alone and others I should replace ?


The other problem, I ve posted here [DKabppls.exe] deals with FREEZING on
shutdown and 2 UNTITLED windows appearing "..stopped responding" WAIT/END
TASK ? both resulting on an extended freeze and finally a POWER DOWN shut
down.

Any ideas appreciated.

You can't easily reinstall parts of the system. You could do a reinstall
from within Windows and the existing system setup (including all drivers)
will not be disturbed unless some part is corrupted and gets replaced.
However your system is likely considerably updated from the original, and
you may find that it actually reverts to older versions of certain files,
requiring the reinstallation of upgrades, and all the complexities of
mismatched versions. I wouldn't recommend trying to reinstall.

You can remove all your network connections and start the network setup over
from scratch. This effectively reinstalls most of the network components.

Note that you can probably download drivers for al your devices from the
www - this would be a worthwhile exercise in any case, especially for the
NIC, to ensure you have the most recent version.

Is the Celeron still available for testing your connection? This is to rule
out the possibility that the ISP made some changes affecting your downloads
at about the time that you switched machines. My first test, however, would
be to retrieve that older ISA card and use it instead, or see if you can get
the original USB connection set up on the new machine. It's a process of
ruling out certain components by substituting others.

For the processes that won't close, use task manager to identify what's
running and shut down certain tasks before closing the machine. Log the
steps carefully so you know what has an affect on shutdown and what doesn't.

Ahem.
I have already replied to your other thread...
it seems you did not read it but just re-posted an additional question
plus the one that had already been answered.(With no resolution yet.)

I suggest not repeating your questions and to concentrate
on one problem at a time.

Just wanted to say that it's usually better to solve your problems and
find out what caused them in the first place. Blindly re-installing your
OS without finding what caused the problem originally may leave you back
at square one.

Anyway to answer your question as best I can...
unless you can backup your data and have access to your drivers...
especially that for your net card...there would be no sense at this time
to reinstall your OS.

One question I have for you...did your network connection "hang" when
you were using your older ISA net card?

There's a small utility called "Keep me Connected".
It pings on an interval that you set. The purpose is too stay
connected to ISPs that disconnect after no activity.
It might help you, or may not. It's free, small download.
Try it, it cant hurt anything.
Unfortunately I have no idea where to d/l it. I've had it for years.
I'm sure it's easy to find on something like Tucows.com.

I don't. It was an old card made for (up to)Win98 and had two install
floppies with it which I dont have here. It was a b*tch to get installed &
running but finally it installed (after I put in the Win98 disk on
'demand'), seemingly OK and began to run

....there would be no sense at this time to reinstall your OS.

It did seem to run in a 'jerky' manner but I wasnt really doing a lot with
the 'new'/ OLD machine at the time. I suspect you are right and it isn't the
new (or old)NIC that was causing the problem.
We've now headed north to our 'Summer' place in Canada and I'm trying to get
this one set up/cleaned up so my wife can use it. Fixed a few problems but
the two I mentioned remain. I have no software for this one except what's
'onboard' and a copy of Win98SE. I can't get the RECOVERY disks from HP
(Not available anymore), but there is a website that says I can still buy
from them for $ 30.00 but then they want a Kings Ransom to ship to Canada.

Whats the HP model number? Have you tried querying the HP hardware
forums?

I found these usefull for the years I spent nursing a PIII machine of
similar vintage and speed.

I agree that an OS reinstall is not a constructive step. Reinstalling
hardware drivers recommended for the HP model, network configurations
and maybe network monitoring SW or AV software might be more
profitable.

Keep us posted. We all learn from these issues.

Glad you are getting the machine sorted out.
It's very helpful when someone such as yourself posts back
to let all the folks here who have submitted suggestions...
to know if those suggestions actually did the trick or not.

If you can't get recovery disks at a fair price...
as long as you can get the drivers you need...a regular Win98se disk should
do the trick
