I have a nearly identical system, and had nearly identical problem, including
frequent black screen/hard crashes/autoreboot/"serious error". I eventually
ended up doing a selective start and was able to start the system without the
hard crashes . I never sorted it out until I removed the Catalyst drivers
and reinstalled a new set from the ATi website. Wouldn't have thought it
would have acted how it did, but all problems resolved as soon as I replaced
the Catalyst drivers.
