Okay, so I've caught up on what everyone's had to say overnight and
following someone's directions, I somehow ended up getting into SAFE MODE
this morning. Then I inserted my Windows XP CD (which says it's a
"reinstallation" CD) for the op system that came on my Dell Inspiron
computer. That allows me to do the START-->RUN thing and get to the CD,
but now I don't know which file to choose. On the main CD directory,
there's a SETUP file, but I also see one under DOTNETFX and SUPPORT-->
TOOLS. Are any of these files the one I need to get my Windows fixed, and
if not, which do I choose to start a repair?

Sorry to be such a bother, and thanks to all of you.

PS. What does OEM mean?

Perhaps these detailed instructions for an XP Repair Install will help.

Scroll down to "XP Repair install"

You've started a new thread ?
What you need to do is boot from the winxp cd, not access it from safe mode;
*but* having said that since you have managed to boot into safe mode, I
assume the graphical interface mode, then your system hive is not corrupt,
or perhaps you booted to last good config?
So what happens if you remove the win cd and reboot, does it?
If you know the make of the hard disk, visit the manufacturers site &
download their bootable testing utility

You should keep your posts in the same thread as the one you originally
started. It helps everyone following the thread to stay on top of things.
When you say you have a "reinstallation" CD it is likely it will revert
your system back to the same state it was when you purchased the computer.
But if you want to know which file to run to run the main setup program for
the disk then run the Setup.exe file that is in the main directory. I
suggest you contact Dell support and see what they have to say.

I apologize for the new thread -- I couldn't find my old one. I talked
to Dell and they had me do a few things which deteriorated the situation
further, so that no I can't even get into SAFE mode. They were supposed
to send me a repair disk last Saturday, but I'm still awaiting its
arrival.

Thanks to all of you who tried to be so helpful. At this point, it
looks like my hard drive may be kaput -- and Drive Savers quoted me
$1600 - $2400 to recover my data. If the Dell disk fails to get me back
to a point where I can recover my files (assuming that I ever actually
receive the promised disk), I'll save them myself; otherwise, I'm going
to look for someone local who may be a bit more reasonable on price and
of course, then I have to replace the hard drive.

That'll teach me to put off backing up my data!

Thanks again.

I believe your Dell came with a "Dell Diagnostic Utility" on a CD-ROM. If
so, the instructions are at
http://tinyurl.com/2adkks

Also, if you are ever able to get back to Safe Mode (or Normal Mode) I would
try to run chkdsk.
