Let's see:

15+ years and still less than 1 percent of desktop.

Free and still less than 1 percent of desktop

Lived through Windows ME and Bob and still Linux is less than 1 percent of
desktop.

Lived through windows 2000 which was NOT marketed as a personal desktop and
still Linux is less than 1 percent of desktop

Vista is less than accepted and still Linux is less than 1 percent of
desktop.

Windows has lock in and proprietary applications and still Linux is less
than 1 percent of desktop.

Linux runs super computers and still Linux is less than 1 percent of
desktop.

Would you like me to continue?

Bottom line, Linux as a desktop system is a piker.
It has failed, and failed miserably.

You guys should abandon your desktop fantasy's and work toward server and
embedded devices because those are areas where Linux might actually stand a
chance of competing.

Bottom line is Linux is free, nobody is interested and it is in effect a
piker.....

I get that MS has other interests than my or your best interests
at heart. I am even willing to stand its crippled nature but it
has problems with what I consider basic functions. Fortunately
good people have suggested additional software fixes, read about
other issues that I haven't pushed my boundries to just yet
but soon may.

So will a Linux OS take advantage of my two CPU computer and
have a driver for my new HP printer? I really I like more control
over my computer than Vista provides. So I am game for at least
considering a New OS. Being under 1% has it advantages as one
target profile is lower for viruses as I understand it.

Point me in a good direction. Thanks.

I'll try reading comp.os.linux.advocacy.

Hey, retard - he said he uses MacOSX. Check the headers.

> Dreamworks.

Hmmn, not a program, but a film studio that is well known for its extensive
use of Linux.

> Photoshop.

Started off as a Mac only program. Most graphic professions still use
Photoshop on Macs.

> Protools.

Same. Started off on the Mac, and still mostly used professionally on Macs.

> Nuendo

Available on Macs as well as PC, and the industry is again, Mac-centric.

> Autocad..

Very old fashioned PC-only *draughting* program, that even Autodesk is
trying to replace with their more modern BIM products, like Revit. I'm an
architect, and prefer its competitor, ArchiCAD, which started off as a Mac
only product, way way back in the early '80s.

I don't do any CAD work these days, but I wonder if any CAD people have
tried out QCAD for 2D work and what they think of it.

I'm a network professional and I do my network diagrams in Dia and either
output the diagrams to PDF or send the .dia files to my coworkers (I also
have Dia for win32 shared on the office network). I think it's a great
replacement for Visio and it is fully crossplatform.

Linux WILL take advantage of your SMP system. Linux has done SMP for
years now and does so very well.

Your HP printer is most likely supported. Unfortunately, printers and
especially multifunction devices are usually supported as an after
thought or through community interaction. HP is very good at supporting
the HPLIP project which allowed Linux-based systems to use their
multifunction devices and printers. My parents have a very new printer
that is supported by HPLIP and it works very well. It prints very nice
photos on photo stock and scans cleanly. I'm sorely tempted to get myself
the same model.

Now, as a warning, we have a Samsung multifunction printer at my
workplace. The Linux support is stunningly bad. They have some piece of
software that just messes up the system and has very, very bad behaviour,
like having to run as root. My experience says: Stay far away.

I'm a huge debian fan, thus I use Ubuntu on my desktop. Others like
OpenSuse. Still others like Fedora. As all these distros are free and
most come with liveCDs I encourage you to download and burn to CDRW/DVD-
RW media at your leasure and try them out.

Or install them into a virtual machine. VMWare Player is free and there
are pre-installed "appliances" (pre-installed virtual machines) available
as well as you can install the OS yourself (visit easyvmx.com to generate
the base files you need to do a fresh install in VMWare Player).

I am an WindowsXP user and very satisfied with it.

But, I am very much doubtful about your claim that days of Linux is over
-
for the very simple reason that if it was true you wouldn't have taken
trouble to visit all these groups -
comp.os.linux.advocacy,alt.os.windows-
xp,microsoft.public.windows.vista.general,alt.usenet.kooks to say R.I.P.
to
Linux.

"Exception proves the Rule" - is one of the fovourite saying of my Linux
user friend.

More antiLinux post he sees - more happier he becomes.

- Reason?.

He counters with another Quote.

Nobody kicks a dead dog.

As a more than satisfied WindowsOS user (XP and not Vista) I don't
understand the reason behind all these anti Linux tirade posted by people
like you.

Of course, if you are being paid to do so then it is alright.

After all who doesn't like an extra bit of income.

Otherwise it is simly useless waste of time.

My friend on innumerable ocassion tried - unsuccessfully - to convert me
to
a Linux user citing all the advantages of Linux.

As long as I am satisfied with my XP, I see no reason for a switch.

On the other hand few of my friends - who felt cheated trying Vista - are
trying Linux as an alternative.

And now MS is again coming up with WGA.

Let me tell you, if people switch over to Mac or Linux, it is not because
they want to, but because MS by trying to force people to switch over to
Vista, msking them to do so.

I'm not saying it's over.
I'm saying it never really started, at least as far as the desktop is
concerned.

Umm no - it's because in our material society most people think that the

I've tried Linux several times.

The main reason I don't use it today is Linux doesn't run the applications I
use.

Why don't the latest versions of Adobe's products work with Wine? Do they
have some kind of secret agreement with Microsoft to keep them incompatable?
Is it asking too much of them to test their products with Wine before
releasing them?

Same thing with Corel. Corel used to have their own Linux distribution, as
well as Linux versions of most of their products.
