I hate to continue this discussion but take it from a graphics newbie, I
find both Photoshop and Gimp interfaces not that great. Both could use
improvements. There is some truth that Linux programmers don't seem to
take usability criticism very well and just plain ignore it. However,
considering how much Adobe and Microsoft spend on their UIs, you would
think that they would be much better than they are. At least linux does
have an excuse, it doesn't cost you anything however, I would hate to
think that the open source programmers are thinking along those
particular lines--"hey quite complaining, you are getting it for free".

Radically changing the Photoshop interface (Office 2007 style) is not going
to go down well, with it being so widely used professionally. Still, it
does evolve, as shown in Photoshop 7 and Photoshop CS3 in particular. It
looks like CS4 is going to bring further changes, with tabbed documents,
like Fireworks.

For what it's worth, there is/was a GIMP spinoff that was done strictly to
make the UI to look more like the Photoshop UI.....

www.gimpshop.com

(Never tried it/don't know how current it is.)

GIMP has a steep learning curve... but once you're over it, it's a very nice
tool. I use it on Windows daily. You sometimes have to do a bit more work
for get an effect that is one click in Photoshop, but that's why there's a
£600 price difference!

I don't find paintshop pro any easier to use. It is probably people who
are expert at the application who have so much trouble with gimp.

Yes, both Photoshop and GIMP suffer from not having the best or most
user friendly interface, but you need to look past that and focus on
what these applications can do. Like with any other complex
application the more you use it, the more comfortable you get with it.
For example Sony's Vegas which I use daily for many hours. Light years
beyond the crude, clumsy and toy like Microsoft Movie Maker, at first
the interface seems awkward and with dozens of filters each having
their own control settings, worrying about multiple tracks and over a
hundred adjustments you can apply frame by frame it seems overwhelming
and even more complex than Photoshop. That is until you get many
thousands of hours of using it under your belt, then you're amazed at
how intutative it really is. Ditto for GIMP, Photoshop or most any
well written application. The learning curve is steep, but the rewards
great.

Get real. You can't use Sony Vegas for hours on end because you have
nothing to edit. Oh, maybe your encounters with Sheep. I almost forgot.
That would give you about 5 hours of footage each day. Just FYI
