Radeon 9600, vpu recover problem

hi,

i've just bought a connect 3d radeon 9600 128mb graphics card, i've tried all the 4.x catalyst drivers and everytime the screen goes blank, comes back on and says vpu recover send error report graphics card not responding to driver.
I am currently using catalyst 3.6 and i'm stable for the time being.

My system
p4 3ghz 800fsb
1.5gig ddr400 ram
asrock p4vt8+ mobo (can't find a lot of info on this tho)

fast writes is off, write combining is off, its connected at 8x AGP.
via drivers up to date, i don't think this card needs a separate power supply, uses .13micron architecture.

it's driving me up the wall lol, is it a card problem or compatibility problem?
any help will be greatly appreciated

this is an update, i've spent a few hours looking at various forums.
i changed my agp bios from auto to 4x,
this makes ati smartgart 4x, fast write is off, vpu recover is on and it is stable, my older games would crash after 3 secs, now they r not. maybe a cure, don't use agp 8x
