Quirk after SP3 installation

I just installed SP3 for XP this morning. After installing the SP I have
been trying all day to get OE to stop with the pop-up messages. I had read a
post from someone else that mentioned to reset the Compact Check Count if
your system crashed during compaction. Oddly enough this silenced the issue
for about 10 to 20 minutes, but as you stated something is opening OE.

I haven't used OE in over a year so it is definitely annoying to have this
continue.

I do not have Windows Desktop Search or Google Desktop search installed so I
am confused as to what item is trying to continually open OE. I was watching
process monitor and could not find anything other than an extra svchost after
the service pack. This is becoming a real nuisance though.

Unfortunately you can't uninstall OE :(

Any help would be appreciated..

Add/Remove Programs>Add/Remove Windows Components>Uncheck the box labeled
Outlook Express :-)

PS: Not sure if that actually removes Outlook Express or just the icons for
it. You could try some tricks with system file protection to rename
msimn.exe and see which program complains that the file can not be found.

Josh, you're not doing yourself or those who are already attempting to
assist you any favors by beginning a new thread in this newsgroup.

Please post any/all follow-up in your original thread in OE General
newsgroup:
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...ss.general/browse_frm/thread/21bed57c0612153f

This behavior is affecting a very, very small minority of users [1] and
we're doing our very best to discover why and how to fix it. Again, please
stick with you original thread.

PA Bear I am really confused by your intentions. I was sticking with the
Outlook Express forum and you instructed me to post my question into the
WinXP general discussion which I did as requested.

All information that is pertinent has been posted in the General XP
discussion. The Outlook Express compact the free disk space message keeps
popping-up on its own even though I do not open or use Outlook Express
anymore. The following reg key is updated every 2 minutes automatically and I
am not sure what is trying to access the Outlook Express data files. Even if
I delete the data files out of my Application data they are recreated by some
process.

I do not have Windows Desktop Search and am unaware of any behind the scenes
indexing causing Outlook Express to regenerate this profile every 2 minutes.
The only solution at this time is to delete the current users
identity\software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0\Compact Check Count string
value and by myself roughly 20 to 40 minutes.

I will continue to maintain both discussions in hopes of a resolution, but
in the future it would be helpful if you did not suggest posting a message in
a forum you do not wish me to post in.

Thanks,
Josh

I had some annoying quirks after SP3 and I fixed the same by removing SP3,
making sure that the drive was clear of rubbish etc, some hard disk
maintenance etc and then reinstalled SP3 without unnecessary applications
running like anti virus etc (I installed it from the full file rather than
using WU). No quirks left.

Just a thought.

Hi Josh,

I have Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 and I also use Outlook
Express 6 all the time. I haven't had the problem you are mentioning, but
you stated that you don't use Outlook Express any longer.

If this is the case, I would go to C:\Documents and Settings\Josh
Beavers\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities and delete all the
Identities stored there. Outlook Express stores its Store Folders there.

> current users
> identity\software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0\Compact Check Count

There should not be a Compact Check Count Reg Key stored there. You may
have a Virus or Spyware installed on your system. Download and install
SpyBot Search and Destroy and see what it saids. Latest is 1.52.

You went off-topic in your second post in a thread (that someone else
started) in OE Genereal newsgroup entitled "OE 6.0 compacting message"...

I asked you to begin a new thread about THAT in WinXP General.

I actually have tried that already. I even went a step further last night to
blow away the entire Outlook Express key in registry under Identities and it
keeps being recreated.

I double checked my indexing service and turned it off so I am really
confused. I may try the uninstall SP3 but have had limited success with that
option in my old troubleshooting days...

Keep you posted,
Josh

Hi Josh,

Turn off System Restore.

Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows
Components

Uncheck Outlook Express. Click Next.

Reboot and turn back on System Restore.
