Quick Basic V4.5 in Windows XP home edition

When I run Microsoft Quick Basic V4.5 (a DOS application) from within Windows
XP (not under a DOS prompt screen) my CPU usage goes to 100% (viewed with
Windows Task Manager - performance tab) and the fan runs almost continuously
in my Compaq Presario V2000 laptop. Any other open Windows applications are
EXTREMELY sluggish. Just shutting down Quick Basic returns CPU usage to the
5-20% range, the fan runs with a normal 25% duty cycle, and the other open
applications act at normal speed. Is the DOS application really the problem
or is that just an illusion?

DUH!

some DOS programs arent really meant to be multitasked.

just a thought: make a shortcut to the quickbasic.exe icon, and in that
shortcut go to the compatability tab, set it to Win98 compatability mode.
Launch QB via that shortcut. If that doesn't work, try the Win95
compatability mode. And if that doesn't work, it sounds like you might
need to find an old copy of Tame.exe and make a batch file that loads tame
and then launches QB.

FWIW, there is a pretty good free Basic out there called LibertyBasic, it
runs well under XP. QB was nice in its day, but its pretty old now.

For more technical insight, google around for "running older DOS programs
under XP". Also search on "QuickBasic", I'm sure you're not the only one
whose tried to do this. It can be done, but may take a bit of tweaking
to get it right.

Try running it full screen.

I tried changing the compatability mode through the shortcut to Quick Basic
V4.5. Regardless of which mode I select (win95, win 98, win 2000, win NT)
the CPU usage jumps to 100% as soon as I run Quick Basic. As soon as I quit
Quick Basic the CPU usage drops to the normal range.

Use an OS which can handle the very old apps you want to use.
