we currently have windows 95 installed on our 5 year old PC....my question is are we able to install windows 2000 professional on our computer????

Yes you can install, but, you can't do an upgrade. In order to upgrade to Windows 2000 you have to be running NT.
2000 was the replacement for NT.

Do you meet the system requirements mentioned on the Windows 2000 box? If you do then you will be able to install 2000.

The thing is here though, I run Windows 2000 Professional and I was able to buy and install an upgrade version without having NT. I have never owned a copy of that.

I had to buy a full copy of Windows 2000 server but I don't think you need NT to install an upgrade of Professional. I might be wrong though. Can anyone clarify?

Actually the bit about having to run NT is completely false for installing Windows 2000. You can upgrade successfully from Win 95, 98, NT 3.51, or NT 4.0 to Windows 2000 Professional. The only instance where NT is needed to do an upgrade is when upgrading the server edition of the OS.
