Q about the location of the My Documents folder

Hi

I'm using XP Pro SP2.

I have the "My Documents" Folder located on a separate physical drive.

If I remove* that drive and restart Windows I wondered how it would cope
with the My Documents folder not being in the location expected? Would it
cause a big problem or simply create a new My Documents folder in the
default location?

*If you're interested to know why... well I need to run a Windows based
diagnostic on some other drives and as my system case is pretty full up its
more convenient to remove the drive which happens to store the documents
folder.

I don't know the answer to your question but can suggest a temporary way
round your problem.

Remove all the contents of your My Documents folder to another folder
and move the My Documents folder back to C.

My Documents is one of a number of system created Special Folders
including My Pictures and My Music. These can more easily be relocated
using Tweak Ui. Download TweakUI, one of the MS powertoys, from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

In TweakUi select My Computer, Special Folders. You can scroll down to
see the full list of Special Folders to the left of the Change
Location button.

You'll see the following message when trying to open the "My Documents" folder (which is now non-existent). Windows does not reset the My Documents folder path automatically.

"The My Documents folder could not be found. Right-click the My Documents icon, click Properties, and then check that the path to your target folder location is correct."

Thats clear. I was hoping it would be as simple as that. I wont need to
access any files stored in My Docs so it wont be an issue.

Thanks very much for your reply and suggestions.

Yes I have done as you have suggested as a work around in the past. But as
the My Docs folder now contains over 90Gb's of data its less convenient to
move the contents around.
