I had to reformat and reinstall me, and when it said to enter the product key
I could not find it. It is MIA, what can I do besides trying to contact
microsoft and get it? If thats even possible.

Any Win Me product key will work with Win Me as long as it's the same
language, OEM, Upgrade or Retail. No activation on that puppy. Microsoft
won't give you a key, btw. They sell those and they are out of print.

If you can get into dos, then at the c prompt, type the following exactly
C:\Windows\command\Find /I "ProductKey" c:\windows\system.dat
Note the space after Find, after /I, and also after "ProductKey"

If that doesn't work, download the free utility, magical jelly bean
http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml

Hope this helps

It's very often on a sticker on the back of the computer case.

Dan,

Going to DOS won't really help as Phil says he reformatted before
attempting the re-install. If he hadn't reformatted then your suggestion
would have been the way to go, here's hoping that Phil didn't reformat but
instead went for an in-place reinstall.

From someone who has Me installed and has a version
(OEM/Retail/Upgrade) like you do.

To round up all the good advice already given, aren't there any remnants
from the originnal version left behind, before you "started from scratch',
i.e. some kind of 'backup' or any notes somewhere? The sticker-idea sounds
real good to me.
