Problems with SBS 2003 and Domain-Workgroup config

Hi guys,

I have Windows Small Business 2003 Server installed on my Dell Poweredge.
The server came preinstalled as a domain controller. Because I don't have
that many XP professional licences, I had to run dcpromo on the server to
downgrade it to a regular server without domain controller. Yesterday I was
looking at the log files and I saw a SBCore error, that said that the
machine was going to shut down in 60 minutes.
After this I ran the configuration to bring it back to a domain controller.
Everything went well and it took a long time. After the server restarted and
prompted me with the login information. No domain was shown, just username
and password field (like a regular windows login screen).
I entered the Administrador user as well as the password I had and it said
applying user configuration. It has stayed there for the past 30 mins. It
doesn't go into Windows at all.
How can I get it to Windows so I can check if the domain was created or not.
For what I saw from the login screen it's not created since it doesn't ask
me for the Domain from the list nor anything, there is no list at all.

Any suggestions on what I can do?

Ok the server logged on, now its finishing the installation. Step 32 of 40.
Lets see how long that takes.

I think you're confused here - XP Pro licenses allow you to run XP Pro on a
workstation. Nothing to do with network access. Perhaps you mean CALs
(client access licenses) - SBS comes with 5, included, and more are
available in 5 packs.

You can't do that. SBS must be a DC and hold all the FSMO roles.

Even if you were to get a non-SBS W2003 box, it wouldn't resolve your CAL
issue - b/c you need a CAL for every computer or user connecting to your
server, SBS or no.

You can't just do that; I suspect you've pooched the install by now ....

I'd start over with a clean install, making sure you know what you're doing
& what SBS's limitations & capabilities are.Try posting in
microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs - you will get a lot of help in there.
Make sure you follow ALL the setup wizards, without fail. Even if you think
you know better, and have experience with enterprise product versions, SBS
has to be configured in very specific ways or it will not work.

The logon went well.
SBS is now installing the other components. It's in step 32 of 40 but it has
been there for the past hour and a half. Should I just cancel the
installation. There is an icon SBS added on the desktop to resume
installation. Or should I leave it for a couple of hours to see if anything
changes.
I checked the processes and it says active, it doesn't say Not Responding.
Should I try and resume the installation?

If you haven't started over from scratch yet, I suggest you do so.....

Hi Lanwench,

I am starting the reinstall tomorrow first thing in the morning.
I tried booting with the SBS installation CD but when I got to the disks
area where I choose where to install, SBS installation told me no hard
drives were found. I have the two partitions C and D still created, I
haven't touched them at all. Why the install program doesn't detect it? I
checked my Dell documentation and driveres and I don't see any disk drivers
that I should use for the installation. I do have a Dell Installation CD
that goes through the whole setup of preparing the computer for the install
but I wonder if I already have the partitions created if I can just go into
the Windows SBS CDs and install right away without going through the Dell CD
and recreate everything. I was looking to see if I had any disks that I
might need for the hard drives but I don't see so most likely I don't need
them.
Please let me know as I plan to install that server tomorrow morning first
thing.

hi Teo,

If you see "no hard drives", this means that the HD adaptor (SCSI?)
has not been installed. During the install bootup from CD, you will
see prompt to "press F6" to install additional drivers. It appears for
only a moment before the rest of the install continues. Usually my
finger is on standby next to F6 - this msg flashes between 3 secs to
15 secs after the boot from CD (depending on your server speed).

Well, after you press F6, you'll later get a prompt to insert the driver
disk. This means you need to create a driver floppy using the CD
provided or some other means. Call Dell for support or use a PC
to create a floppy disk, and you'll need to know what your Dell
server is using.

Since you have a Dell, try booting from their OpenManage Install CD ....this
will install all the drivers for you.

They're probably SCSI then - RAID?

Definitely use that.

No, wipe them out and start over from scratch.
