Problems updating

Eddie

Running XP Pro SP2.
AVG is Anti Virus
Defender is only Anti-Spyware.
Windows firewall is only firewall running.

When trying to update, my system downloads the updates but fails to install
them. I get no error messages.

Not sure exactly when this problem started as I have been using Automatic
Update. It was downloading but not actually updating. Last good update shown
in Update History is Nov, 2007. Prior to Nov 07, updates downloaded and
installed with no problems.

I had the same issue many others list regarding the Windows Genuine
Validation. My system downloaded it but would not install it. Following the
threads on the board I ran the "updated MGA Diag tool". System shows as
"Genuine" but there's no effect on the problem.

I scanned my system for "Vundo". System is clean.

Although I had never repaired my installation I registered the Wups2.dll and
downloaded and ran the standalone Windows Update Agent as suggested @
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144. I downloaded and ran the AUreset
utility as suggested. This also has not solved the problem.

To get around the "Genuine Windows" Validation tool issue, I manually
browsed to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\"long char string"\update
folder and executed the update manually.

That allowed me to see the "custom" or express buttons. I selected Custom
and was presented with a list of updates to download and install.

I selected the updates. They downloaded but failed to install. None of the
updates I downloaded today show up under the "Review your update history"
tab. I was able to install all of them by manually starting each one using
the method I described above.

I eagerly await your suggestions to solve this problem with updates not
installing.
Hopefully I gave you all the info you need and won't be chastised for
forcing you to use your balls. The crystal ones.

Have you tried the suggestion of downloading it manually

Thanks, but I'm not particularly interested in downloading a whole new set of
problems right now. I think I'll let 'em try and get SP2 working before I
tackle SP3. By that time SP4 will probably be out and SP3 will actually be
usable. That seems to be the pattern that I've seen so far anyway.

You cannot install updates that you download from the Windows Update Web site on a Windows
XP-based computer

You Cannot Install Some Updates or Programs
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798


Otherwise you'll need to check the WU Log for more clues


How to view the Update log in Windows:-

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type: %windir%\windowsupdate.log
and then click OK.

Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate the error code(s)
associated with the latest failed attempt to download/install. If appropriate copy and
paste the error codes into this thread so someone may be able to assist you. On the other
hand, you may be able to find the error code and other suggestions by searching the
Newsgroup.

Also check Windows folder for file called KB******.log (****** = number of update ie
KB896688) and post the contents of the failed update.
This may provide further clues as to why the update failed.

Thanks for the good info.

WU log does list some different errors. I have started going through them
and will finish them after work today.

Thanks again for pointing me to the WU logfile. I was able to track down the
errors listed and take corrective action.

Had an 0x80240020 error which I resolved by going to
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910341/en-us.

One of the registry entries was blank.

Also had an 0x80070003 error which sent me to
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910336/en-us

And finally had an 80072ee7 error which I resolved by following
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=836941

None of the update sites were in my "trusted sites" zone.

Not sure what precipitated the failure of my auto update but it seems to be
back on track now.
