Hello,

I was hoping someone in here could help me. I just received a new
flash drive (my first) and am having a few problems with it.

The problem I'm having is really bizarre. This is what happens..

I'll plug in the flash drive to my computer's USB port and drop a zip
file in it. I'll click the zip file, and it opens and shows the
contents just fine.

Then, I'll unplug the flash drive from the computer.. and plug it back
in. I'll click on the same file and get this prompt..

"Please insert the last disk of the Mult-Volume set and click OK to
continue"

I'll click "OK" and nothing happens.. I click "CANCEL" and the prompt
disappears.

I tried dragging and dropping the zip file from the flash drive to a
folder on my computer, but when I tried to open it.. I got a prompt
saying it was corrupt.

Is there a problem with using zip files on flash drives?

Any replies will be greatly appreciated!

Don`t forget flash drives are really used for portable programs and
storage purposes , they don`t work in the same way as normal drives.
( AFAIK )

There's no problem using .zip files on a USB drive - I've used them for
a long time, and all zip files from different zip programs work just fine.

My guess is (until someone more knowledgeable comes along) is that for
some reason (possibly because the zip file, when created, was larger
than the USB drive capacity) the zip program has produced a multi-part
zip file, and the one you have on your USB drive needs to one left
behind on your main hard drive to function correctly. Unplugging the zip
breaks the link between the two and on plugging in again, it can't find
the other part of the zip file that it needs.

Have you got your zip program set to produce multi-part zips when it
exceeds the drive capacity or maybe to split all zips into parts - I
don't know if that is possible? If so, you wouldn't have noticed a
problem until you used a removable drive.

I repeat, this is just a guess - but I think the answer may lie
somewhere along those lines.

Bob

The only files I used in the flash drive were zips, so I assumed the
problem was with the zip files.

But then I tried other files like jpegs, texts and executables and
found that they too get corrupted.

I reformatted the flash drive trying both the FAT and FAT332 file
systems.. and the same exact thing happens.

I'll put the files in the flash drive, and they'll seem fine. Then
I'll unplug the drive and plug it back in.. and some of the files are
corrupted.

I can't understand what I could be doing wrong.. I have an mp3 player
which doubles as a flash drive and I use it the same way with no
problems.

I doubt you're doing anything wrong, they're so straightforward to use.
I've used lots of them, and all I've ever done is plug them in and use
them. I'd try another flash drive on the same machine and see if the
same happens, there's always the possibility the USB drive is faulty.

This sounds like the problem to me also - the original file that was zipped
was "spanned" into multiple zip files. This goes back to when we only had
floppies to use and anything over 1.4 meg had to be spanned over numerous
floppies.
