Problem with video resolution and docked/undocked hardware profile

I've got a newer Sony laptop running Windows XP Pro SP2, fully patched. The
native resolution is 1280x800, undocked. When docking it, it won't switch to
the supported resolutions of the external video port.

I've booted up undocked and deleted the docked profile and let it generate a
new docked profile, but it still forces the onboard video resolutions.

I've tried setting the docked profile as the default and deleting the
undocked profile, updating the BIOS, video drivers, tried a different docking
stations and flat panels, and nothing has fully resolved the issue.

I uninstalled all the monitors from Device Manager and for a few moments I
was able to get the full range of supported resolutions for my Dell 20" flat
panel. After rebooting, problem cam back.

Anyone have suggestions?

Thanks in advance.
