problem with printer

Hi new here and know nothing about computers..Yesterday I tried to print some picture and everytime I try to print error pops up saying..Hp deskjet has encounter a problem and needs to close...the last time i use my printer was a month ago and never had any problems..my computer is gateway 2000 and the printer is hp deskjet5550 and I using windows xp home edition

I have a similar issue with my 5550; every time I print I get an error, except that the printer is usually done printing by the time the error pops up. Do you get output, or does the error actually keep the printer from printing anything?

the first couple times nothing would print-so i turned the printer off and unpluged it for a little bit and restarted my computer now it will print but error pops up first and then it will print.
