Hello
If I want privacy on vacation, knowing a Chromebook has no Ethernet port, I would get an adapter. Then a wireless router. I think I must be wired to the router from a PC to configure it.
I then can either stay connected or go wireless after configuration?
Please correct me as I have not yet bought the router or adapter.

My desktop - I had the ISP's router bridged and I configured my old router then all else got internet off the WiFi from that now old router.
Please correct and thank you.

I'm unsure exactly what it is you are trying to do.
Are you going on vacation and planning on staying in a hotel?
I am assuming that you don't wish to go wireless?

Sounds like you have already configured the router. So if your hotel has an Ethernet connection in your room, just connect it to your router and connect your Chromebook to the router wirelessly.

When you configured the router, make sure you have the wireless network password protected.

Now if the hotel offers only wireless connection (no Ethernet connection) then we have a different problem. I'll have to ask a friend of mine who travels frequently and is concerned about privacy.

Alternately, you can use a VPN. A VPN will give you a secure encrypted connection to the Internet now matter where you are. It works wirelessly. Search for VPN Provider.

I spoke with my friend this morning. He says most hotels don't have Ethernet ports. They typically use just a wireless network to allow guests Internet access. If you're on a site that uses https (note the s at the end which stands for secure), your data is encrypted. If there's no s then your data is in plain text, hence, not secure.

In this situation, if you're concerned about privacy, you can use a VPN. A VPN encrypts the data between you and the VPN provider. A quick search for the term VPN will yield pages of providers.
