Print job still spooling

Hi,

I have one unit of HP Laserjet P1006 setup and connected to my PC USB port.
Printing from my PC to the printer is all alright without any issue. Somehow,
whenever I login to our application server via RDP (Win XP Pro - remote
desktop) and to attempt any printing, the print job will be pending at the
spooler for an indefinite amount of time. Eventually it will just stuck there
and does not print at all.

I had checked on both the server properties and printer properties in the
remote desktop environment, the TS has correctly mapped and assigned the port
to the printer. I wonder what is wrong here and what causes the print job is
still spooling in TS?

Thanks

Unfortunately, the HP LJ P1006 is not compatible with TS.

Vera,

Thanks and appreciate with your feedback. Based on the following HP
documentation it is indeed the HP LJ1006 is not compatible with TS but how
about the previous HP LJ1020? We do have a numbers of the LJ1020 connected
and use for remote desktop printing and it works without any issue. Maybe
these two models does operates in a different behaviour, yes?

Besides, I have another model - HP LJ P2014 which I believed is compatible
to be use for TS printing. Somehow I encountered a different issues with this
model where at certain time at remote connection I am able to print without
any hassle. On other time, my printjob will just be pending at the TS spooler
for an unlimited amount of time. I had attempted to modify the registry as
per one of the MS knowledgebase article but it is not helping either. At end
of the day, I have to contact our sys admin to kill my TS printjob and logoff
& re-login to the RDP to test my luck if I am able to print successfully.

Sorry for my lengthy descriptions but do you have any idea what could have
been wrongly done as per the second paragraph?

Thanks
law

If the LJ1020 (which is not TS-compatible either) works for you,
then you have been lucky so far. Incompatible drivers often cause
irratic behaviour, they can work fine for years and then stop
working. Or work fine for user 1 but never for user 2, etc.

And maybe it's silently hanging your printer spooler, and thus
causing the problems with your LJ2014? Check the EventLog on the
server for printer events.

Hi,

I would not recommend you use host-based printers with
terminal services unless you are using a third-party
universal printer driver software or Easy Print (Server 2008).
Although the P2014 is listed as compatible, it is still host-based.

These types of printers use excessive CPU and bandwidth
and this can severely affect the performance of your TS. If
you only have a *few* of these printers, AND users rarely
print to them, AND the print jobs are a very small number
of pages, AND you have tons of excess CPU and bandwidth,
then maybe it would be acceptable.

Thanks.

Yes, I do believed I am lucky to have the LJ1020 printers to be working fine.
I guess I need to make a visit to my technical department and see if any
discoveries could be obtain from the EventLog.

Appreciate with your assistance :)
TQ

We using a number of HP1020 and 1022 with TS without any problems. The only
trick we had to do was on the PC side to enable printer pooling and select a
LPT or COM port along with the USB. Also tried the P1006 -was only able to
get one page to print out before it choked the print spooler.
