Plextor PX-712UF DVD-RW cannot read DVDs

Mister Scary

Never had this problem before the last couple of Windows updates. It cannot
read either DVD-ROM or DVD movies. When I try to look at a disc in Windows
Explorer I get the following error message

"J:\ is not accessible

The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."

CDs work fine. I tried burning the latest firmware and it didn't change
anything.

If the device reads and writes CDs then the DVD laser is most probably shot.
